According to RadarMagazine.com, before Cruise started dating Katie Holmes, he invited actress Scarlett Johansson to a Scientology center where he showed her literature about the church. "After two hours of proselytizing," according to the website, "Cruise opened a door to reveal a second room full of upper-level Scientologists who had been waiting to dine with the pair, at which point the cool-headed ingénue politely excused herself."

In 1997, Cruise and other big time Hollywood entertainers took out an international newspaper ad denouncing Germany for resorting to the same totalitarian tactics against Scientologists that the country used against the Jews under Hitler during the 1930s.

1. HEIDI KLUM AND SEAL SPLIT

This celebrity scandal of 2012 was not messy per se, but you can't deny that it came as a shock to most of us. Afterall, they seemed to have the perfect, fairy tale marriage with yearly renewals of their vows and all that. The details of the split are still a little sketchy with the couple only saying that after much soul searching, they had grown apart. Oh well, I'm definitely going to miss the extravagant Halloween costumes!

2. KIM K FLOUR BOMBED

I may or may not have burst out laughing when I saw photos of Kim Kardashian doused in flour at the launch of her perfume but that's besides the point. Apparently, an animal rights activist pelted Kim K with a flour bag and also screamed the words "fur hag" while doing so. PETA did not claim responsibility for the attack but when Kim threatened to press charges, they did say she should just get a life. Ouch!

3. JOHNNY DEPP AND VANESSA CALL IT QUITS

Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis had done the seemingly impossible...they had been together for 14 long years! But they finally called it quits in one of the most saddening celebrity scandals of 2012. No one really knows what happened but I'm guessing the fact that Johnny Depp had been linked with Angelina Jolie, then Ashley Olsen and more recently, Amber Heard had something to do with it. The good news is Johnny Depp is finally single! I kid, I kid.

4. SNOOKI'S NUDE PHOTOS LEAKED

This isn't the first time that a celebrity's nude photos have been allegedly leaked (remember poor Scarlett?). Snooki has been trying to keep a low profile since her pregnancy but it seems like scandals follow her no matter where she goes. The internet was suddenly filled with self-clicked photos of Snooki taking off a robe in what looked like a hotel. Her publicist went on to confirm that it was indeed her and that someone had leaked them for their personal gain. Oh Snooki!

5. KANYE TWEETS A NAKED PHOTO OF KIM K

Kim Kardashian certainly has a penchant for scandals. Why else would she feature twice in this list of messiest celebrity scandals of 2012?! Apparently, boyfriend Kanye West tweeted a photo of a naked woman who looked a lot like Kim eating salad on a bed. The picture was deleted almost immediately but it was too late. Kim completely denied it was her and Kanye claimed he didn't even tweet it. Okay then.

6. TOM CRUISE AND KATIE HOLMES SPLIT

I can't say I was totally surprised by this news but it is sad to see TomKat split after 5 years of being together. Some believe that Katie was growing tired of her career taking a back seat while others claim that Tom's belief in Scientology played a big role in driving a wedge between the two. Also the fact that he wanted to enroll Suri in some sort of Scientology bootcamp. Either way, this duo have split and Katie has sole custody of little Suri. Apparently, she's also visibly happier and doing much better since the divorce.

7. WHITNEY HOUSTON

In what has to be one of the most tragic celebrity deaths of 2012, we lost legendary singer Whitney Houston. While her death was initially shrouded in mystery with her family suspecting foul play, toxicology reports ultimately confirmed that the cause of death was excessive cocaine usage which had caused a heart attack and accidental drowning. How many more amazing people do we have to lose to drugs?!

8. TRAMPIRE AKA KRISTEN STEWART

Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson have been an onscreen favorite for a while now and while they never officially confirmed it, it was obvious that the duo were a couple off-screen as well. And in what has to be the no.1 messiest celebrity scandal of 2012, Kristen Stewart was pictured canoodling with Rupert Sanders, director of Snow White and the Huntsmen. Instead of denying it (probably because there was no way they could), both issued separate public apologies but that hasn't stopped this from becoming one messy affair. Rob has since moved out of the couple's house, while Liberty Ross, wife of Rupert supposedly tweeted a picture of Snow White with an alcohol bottle saying "not so pretty or pure afterall" after which she deleted her account. Will Rob be able to get over this "momentary indiscretion"? Only time will tell.

And there you have it, the messiest celebrity scandals of 2012! Considering the year isn't over yet, I'm sure we'll have more celebrity scandals to add to this list. Have I missed a messy 2012 celebrity scandal? Do tell!
